Mai bin Lai means " it doesn't matter"
Its the thai motto and that attitude is the only way to keep your wits here.
Used translator to catch cheap bus to local pier to catch ferry to island.
But last year the stopped ferry delivery there. My guidebook is out of date.
Mai bin Lai.
But of course at pier is an English expat from wales who will get me on the right bus and procure ticket, but it's a good bit more than I intended to pay.
If you are a foriegner here expect to be scammed at every stop.
I've seen backpackers get mad stomp away and only end up coming back later to pay because it's way to hard to find anything if you don't speak Thai.
So I know I'll pay extra, but I've learned to haggle good enough that I don't get cleaned out.
The fella was a good guy though we spent most the day chatting and it turns out the pier is owned by the local mafia, and you work for them or pay what they say or no ride!
His stories were great though, worth the extra bhat.
He is an ex "body guard and bondsman" but it sounded a bit more like hired thug..
He spent three years protecting a man with a 10,000 quid(?) bounty on his head by the IRA.
I got to see a couple shrapnel scars and learn how to make a fella drop a knife after you take him down.
Total craziness but I made the best of it, and he told me where I can get the only "proper fish and chips" in Thailand.
He drove me to a bustop on the back of his beat up Harley.
When the bus failed to show he got on his phone and made a bunch of noise and five minutes later it was "off you go mate! "
This place is completely crazy.
Mai bin lai!
